8:00 am: Goodbye Queues, Hello FASTag

NASHIK: The launch of the electronic toll collection system, or FASTag, which was to be implemented from previous midnight has now been rescheduled to 8:00 am today (December 15). A FASTag is an electronic toll collection system whereby the toll fee will be instantly debited from the FASTag fixed on the windshield of a passenger.

This is basically a sticker that comes with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology which is automatically read by the sensors placed at the toll plazas. This sticker is linked either to a prepaid account like Paytm or through a bank account. The amount is deducted automatically whenever your vehicle crosses any toll plaza which is RFID-enabled.

This is expected to enable a smooth flow of traffic, crowd and queue-free toll plazas, time saving and reduce pollution. Under One Nation, One Tag, the government had planned to roll out FASTag across all national highways and select state highways from December 1. Later it postponed to December 15.

All vehicle holders will now have to pay the necessary registration fee of Rs 100. Non-FASTag vehicles will have to bear double toll cost post December 15.
