At 16.70%, June records deficit rainfall

NASHIK: The extended dry spell and deficit rainfall in June has become a cause of worry for paddy growers. With Monsoon yet to intensify in North Maharashtra, the district is staring at deficit rainfall as it has received close to average rainfall of 167.01 mm in the month of June which is below the average rainfall of 174.40 mm.

Last year, during the same period, the district had experienced hardly any satisfactory rain. The situation from June 1, 2021 to June 30, 2021 is also not different as the district has received 16.70% rainfall compared to the last year’s 24.63%. From June 1, 2021 to June 30, Igatpuri recorded highest rainfall of 675.0 mm which is followed by Surgana 360.6 mm, Peth 340.8 mm, Trimbakeshwar 240.0 mm, Niphad 149.8 mm and Malegaon 149.8 mm.

Due to less rainfall in the catchment areas of the district dams, as a result, water-level in Gangapur Dam Complex has not gone up as was expected earlier. If a similar situation persists in this month of July also, then people will be put to hardship and the farmer who is a backbone of agricultural economy, may face survival problem for his sown crop. Unlike other parts of the state including Mumbai which is experiencing good rains, Nashik district is yet to experience the average normal rainfall.

Paddy cultivation

In Trimbakeshwar taluka, the farmers are in trouble due to the rainfall deficit. The major crops grown in Trimbakeshwar taluka are paddy, nagli and varai. These crops were planted extensively during the early rains. This has added to the worries of farmers.
