NASHIK:
The Election Commission has extended the deadline for voter verification/authentication by two months to February 20, 2020. The EC had set a target to verify details of 45 lakh electors in 15 assembly constituencies of the district. However, due to technical glitches, the deadline has now been extended to February 20 from December 20, 2019.
The election branch is to prepare draft voter list by February 28, 2020, next. During the voter verification drive, booth level officers (BLOs) will conduct a door-to-door visit to verify the voter’s entries. The official could verify using any of the 10 documents approved by the Election Commission.
The BLO, however, would not be authorised to demand any specific documents out of the ten documents validated by the Commission. The drive is meant for citizens for verification of their names, inclusion/deletion/correction in the voter details and Voter IDs.
The EC is also confirming the addition of Aadhaar and phone numbers in the electoral roll ensuring that names of the transferred, duplicate voters, the deceased and bogus voters should be omitted from the verified electoral roll.
Under the verification, first-time voters upon completion of 18 years as on January 2020 will find a place in the verified roll. Earlier in a given period of 15 days, the election branch could verify the identity of only 89,000 voters due to technical reasons.
Now, it will have an uphill task to authenticate the identity of around 45 lakh voters in stipulated two months’ deadline period.
