General assembly for waving off property tax up to 500 sq ft awaited

NASHIK: The tenure of Nashik Municipal Corporation Mayor and members has ended. However, the mayor’s term is till March 14. On the lines of Mumbai, Mayor Satish Kulkarni had submitted a letter to the Municipal Commissioner demanding a property tax waiver for residential units up to 500 square feet in Nashik and also directed to put the proposal in the general body meeting.

Kulkarni stated If Nashik Municipal Corporation’s newly constructed IT hub, logistics park and 22 plots in the city get developed on a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) basis, the corporation will generate an income of around Rs. 500 to 600 crore from these three projects. He added that even if the property tax of these residential units is waived off, the corporation will not suffer much loss due to the decent income generated from these three projects.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to waive off property tax on houses up to 500 square feet. Accordingly, in the run up to elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Nashik Municipal Corporation, Congress and other parties have also demanded property tax exemption.

The mayor has ordered to put a proposal in the general assembly. However, no such proposal was tabled at the last general meeting, citing that the officer concerned was on sick leave. As the corporation conducted a special general meeting for recruitment on an honorarium basis in the municipal corporation, if they conduct a special general meeting for property tax exemption, Nashik residents will definitely benefit from the approval.

The decision of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to waive off property tax on houses up to 500 square feet has helped poor and middleclass families. The lower and middle-income groups have suffered financially during the pandemic and many people lost their job. Therefore, the waiving off of property tax brought slight relief to them.

In Nashik Municipal Corporation limits, 40 to 45% of the total properties in the city are up to 500 square feet. Such families will be greatly relieved if Nashik Municipal Corporation waives off property tax. Therefore, the corporation needs to conduct a special GBM (general body meeting) to table this proposal.

The increased lease has not been applied to 1,60,000 homes in the city for many years, and many newly developed properties in the city need to be taxed. Therefore, the increased lease and taxes of the newly developed properties will help the corporation generate decent revenue.
